Let’s get to it. This week I want to talk about minding your own business.
I have finally learned that minding my business has given me a sense of peace. I used to think I had the words, “tell me all your business,” written on my forehead. Complete strangers would tell me things that had absolutely nothing to do with me. I found myself carrying that with me. It’s not that I don’t care. It’s not that I don’t want to help. I’m just at a point in my life where I need peace. I’ve always felt like whenever there is strife, it always has something to do with other people. I can’t control other people. I can’t change other people, but I can damn well control how I respond. Everyone doesn’t live the way you might like them to. Everyone thinks differently. You have to let people run their own race. They might wonder why you live and do the things you do, too.
Think about it. People always have something to say. How many times have you spoken badly about somebody? How many times have you been perplexed about how someone else lives? The list goes on and on. Now ask yourself: Is any of this my business? Are they hurting me (sometimes it might be killing you), but if there is nothing you can do, mind your business. You will feel free. For a while now, when someone tells me something – even if I know it’s an outright lie, my response is the same. That’s awesome. I’m happy for you. I hope it all works out. I’m going to be praying for you. I really do pray for them. Then, I keep it pushing. Minding your own business relieves you of suffering. I wish I had understood this concept years ago.
By minding my own business, I have found peace. Even the Bible tells you to mind your own business.
1 Thessalonian 4:11-12 New Living Translation (NLT)
11 Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.
12 Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
To me, this is saying make it your goal to live in peace. Focus on the things you can control, otherwise, mind your business. Stop interfering with other people’s lives. Work on yourself. Don’t misunderstand though. This doesn’t mean not to help others or show love. You should always try to be a light. Condemning people is not your business.
John 21:21-22 New Living Translation (NLT)
21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
So Peter was asking Jesus about John. Jesus basically said, what’s it to you? Mind your own business.
My Mommy All the time
Don’t ask, they might tell you.
My mom has always told me this. I didn’t really know what this meant until I got older. Basically, she was telling me to mind my own business otherwise, I may find out something I don’t want to know. Word. She is so right. After thinking about it, it occurred to me that my mom was never all up in my business. She didn’t ask me too many questions. I know she had an idea of what I might be up to, but she minded her business. That must be how she kept her peace. She loved unconditionally and supported no matter what. But she didn’t ask questions. I wish I could have understood that years ago when my kids were younger. I asked way too many questions, and they told me. I lost sleep, I hurt, I blamed, I cried, I had all the feels. I love my kids unconditionally and will always support them. I just don’t ask too many questions anymore. Because of that, I sleep well at night, I stopped crying all the time. I stopped blaming, I feel peace.
By minding my own business, I don’t feel stressed. I don’t feel bothered. My mental health is improving. I know for a fact that there have been many times where I was all up in God’s business. That never ends well. God can’t be God when you are interfering in his work. Mind your business.
Have you ever found yourself talking about a celebrity? Did you see that? What was she thinking? She is so ignorant. You feel really pressed about it. Why do we do that? Why do we care? Why are we so involved in their business? We don’t even know them. They surely aren’t thinking about us. We are making them richer instead of focusing on our own business and making our own lives better. But I’m not here to preach.
Some people go on social media and talk mad ish! Why? Jealousy? They’re mad to see someone living their best life. Let’s be real. People don’t go on social media and put the bad or sad parts of their lives on it for people to see. What happens? People get jealous. People get mad. People talk ish. Well, if we were minding our own business in the first place, and focusing on our own lives, this probably wouldn’t happen.
All I will say is that minding your own business will make your life better. You will find a peace that you didn’t know you could have. Try it. You’ve got nothing to lose…but if you don’t…it’s none of my business.
